Second Opinion Anti-Malware AppsThe main contenders in the second opinion Anti-Malware race
The terms `anti-malware' and `anti-virus' are really the same thing nowadays.
The more established companies in the internet security game, have stayed with the ubiquitous term anti-virus, while other companies have reaped the benefits of using the newer term - anti-malware.
At the end of the day, the best security app to choose for your system is the one which stops the most viruses/malware. This is very apparent when an `anti-virus' app is tested against an `anti-malware' app. The names become irrelevant. It's all about the results.
Not all security apps are designed to be standalone or full-time security solutions. Most of the apps on this page are designed to be run occasionally, or alongside your main security app. Hence the term - second opinion anti-malware.
When you're online, It can offer peace of mind to have this second line of defence, and it's also good to see some of these second opinion anti-malware apps occasionally blocking unwanted connections in real time.
Below are a few of the renowned and more popular second opinion anti-malware apps:
(See also Malicious Software Removal Tool, Microsoft Safety Scanner and Free Security Apps for Windows.) (Also, a special thank you to The PC Security Channel and Leo for helping me with my malware research.)
Malwarebytes is one of the most renowned names in `anti-malware' detection. I've been using their Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Premium) for quite a few years now. It's an anti-malware app which always runs in the background and can be used alongside your main internet security suite. It's nice to see it blocking connections in real time. Since version 3.0 it's now called Malwarebytes Premium. Because of the extra added features, it is said to be able to replace your main security. Personally, based on test results, I wouldn't use it as my only security app. I run it alongside Windows Defender.
HitmanPro / HitmanPro.Alert
As a second opinion anti-malware app, HitmanPro is one of the most well known. If you want always on 24/7 real-time protection, then take a look at HitmanPro.Alert. If you don't need real-time protection, HitmanPro is the anti-malware scanner you can turn to for that last thorough check of your system, before you give it the green light. I've been using it for quite some time now to periodically scan my Windows 10 PCs.
Zemana AntiMalware has come a long way since it was first released. Like Malwarebytes, Zemana AntiMalware comes with real-time protection and can be run alongside your regular main security. It has a simple and clean user interface, and scanning is pretty quick. It was one of the first to pop up and block malware test files I was using when researching malware apps for this site.
So there you have it. The most popular second opinion `anti-malware' apps for Windows devices.
Like I said, it's all about the results. If your main internet security app is one of the best, then you might not need a second opinion anti-malware app like the ones here, and in comparison - you might be disappointed with the side-by-side test results. That being said, it's nice to have a second line of defence, and it's peace of mind to see any app at all doing a good job of improving your internet security.
Personally, for most Windows computers, I'm happy to use Malwarebytes as my second opinion anti-malware app, alongside Windows 10's Windows Defender. I occasionally do a scan with HitmanPro.
For my main Windows 10 PC, I again use Malwarebytes, but alongside the full paid version of Bitdefender Internet Security 2018. I again occasionally do a second opinion scan with HitmanPro.
I'm interested to know which anti-malware apps you use, so let me know in the comments.
